Who we are

Common Good Collective is a nonprofit organization rooted in Richmond, Virginia with a simple but powerful mission: to be a good neighbor. We exist to reduce loneliness, strengthen local connection, and create space for shared belonging in the neighborhoods we call home.

We are not a charity that serves “others” from a distance—we are a community of neighbors seeking the common good together. Our work is relationship-first, justice-minded, and radically welcoming.

Why we exist

America is facing a loneliness epidemic. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, disconnection is now a public health crisis—affecting mental and physical health, trust in communities, and even life expectancy. Many people feel like they don’t belong anywhere.

We believe that needs like friendship, support, purpose, and community are just as essential as food and housing—and just as worthy of investment.

Nearly 1 in 2 adults in the U.S. report experiencing loneliness—and that was before the COVID-19 pandemic intensified it.
→ U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community, 2023

Young adults (18–25) report the highest rates of loneliness—nearly 2 in 3 say they often feel left out or isolated.
→ Cigna’s 2020 Loneliness Index

Chronic loneliness is as harmful to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
→ Holt-Lunstad, Brigham Young University meta-analysis

Loneliness increases the risk of:

  • Heart disease (29%)

  • Stroke (32%)

  • Dementia in older adults (50%)

We’re starting small, but thinking big. Our work includes:

  • Hosting community-centered events and small groups

  • Partnering with local professionals to offer free or low-barrier wellness and support services

  • Building intentional spaces where people can connect across divides—political, generational, economic, or spiritual

  • Listening deeply to the needs of our neighbors and co-creating solutions

We don’t believe in quick fixes. We believe in shared tables, honest conversations, and showing up again and again.

What we do

Our Vision

  • We envision a Richmond where:

    • No one feels invisible or left out of the neighborhood story

    • Local organizations work together to create stronger support networks

    • Everyone—regardless of background—has a place to belong

As we grow, we’re exploring opportunities to expand our work into welcoming physical spaces, including gathering places, workshops, and future hospitality projects.

  • Bridging What Divides Us

At Common Good Collective, we believe that our greatest hope lies not in agreeing on everything—but in choosing to build something together anyway.

We are living in an age of deep division—political, racial, generational, spiritual. Many people feel like they don’t fit anywhere. Conversations have become charged. Trust is fading. But here’s what we know: the only way to rebuild community is to sit down together again.

So that’s what we’re doing—one gathering, one shared table, one honest conversation at a time.

    What Are We Building?

We’re building bridges. Slowly, intentionally, and with a lot of listening.

We create programs and spaces where:

    • People from different backgrounds can see each other as neighbors, not enemies

    • Difficult stories are honored, and differences are not erased but embraced

    • Common ground can be discovered through art, conversation, service, and food

    • Empathy grows—not because we force agreement, but because we practice presence

We’re not about polarizing debates. We’re about showing up, face to face, and choosing compassion over certainty.

A Spiritual Core with Open Arms

While our roots are deeply grounded in the Christian call to love neighbor and seek peace, our programs are radically inclusive. You don’t have to believe what we believe to belong here. We meet people where they are—and invite them to help build something good.

    How We Do It

    • Hosting story-based workshops that invite understanding across lines of difference

    • Facilitating community dialogues and listening circles

    • Designing events that bring people together around shared experiences—like music, meals, and meaningful service

    • Equipping local leaders and volunteers to model neighborly love in divided spaces

Because We’re Better When We’re Together

Division doesn’t heal on its own. Connection doesn’t happen by accident. We have to build it—with courage, humility, and a commitment to the common good.

Let’s make Richmond a place where that kind of healing work takes root.

  • At Common Good Collective, we’re already building connection through programs, conversations, and small gatherings—but we believe our work needs a physical home. A place where Richmond neighbors can gather, linger, create, and belong.

That’s why we envision one day opening the Common Good Café—a warm, welcoming community café and shared event space designed to serve both great coffee and greater connection.

    A Space with Purpose

Our dream is to transform a historic home into a nonprofit-run gathering space that includes:

    • A neighborhood café with excellent coffee and room to stay awhile

    • Indoor and outdoor seating for working, talking, studying, or resting

    • A backyard stage and flexible green space for open mic nights, concerts, workshops, and public events

    • Rooms for small group meetings, co-working, or community services

    • A tangible expression of our mission: Coffee. Conversation. Common Ground.

    Why a Café?

Because people need more than just services—they need spaces where relationships naturally happen. The Common Good Café would be a front porch for our mission—a place where neighbors become friends, causes gain momentum, and compassion becomes contagious.

It would also serve as a social enterprise—helping fund our nonprofit programs, employ local residents, and expand the reach of our good-neighbor work across Richmond.

    A Long-Term Dream, Built Together

The café doesn’t exist yet. But the dream is real—and it’s rooted in everything we’re doing today. With your partnership, we hope to one day bring this vision to life. Because Richmond needs more spaces that don’t just serve people—but bring them together.
